They capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity that you can use in your home. They are made from photovoltaic cells. Since solar energy is a renewable resource, by installing solar panels you can generate your own renewable electricity thereby reducing your energy bills and helping protect the environment.
- You may be able to have solar panels fitted for free as part of one of the Government’s grants and schemes, paid for by a levy in our energy bills
- Your energy bills will be reduced immediately, by as much as £240 a year or more
- You will be helping protect the environment and contributing to the UK’s emissions target, by improving your energy efficiency
A 4.4KW system fitted on an average 3 bedroom semi-detached house, with electric heating, could save up to £300–£500 per year. (dependant on usage and 20p/kwh electric unit charge).
There is also a payment available from your energy supplier, provided they are signed up to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
The SEG is a legal obligation for any electricity supplier that supplies at least 150,000 customers to offer an export tariff to those with solar panels for each kWh produced.
There is quite a large discrepancy between the different SEG rates from the different providers. These can vary between 2p and 5p per kwh,(annually £79 and £197, for a 4.4Kw system so it pays to shop around.
We have improved many different types of homes across the UK by fitting solar panels. Here is a short, speeded up video showing our installers in action at a typical home.
